Doctor, Doctor!!!!
Just as Tom Smedley, one of our main helmsmen was about to board the BA flight to Boston, USA for the start of the Transatlantic Race, his Blackberry chirped. It was the moment Tom had been working towards for five intensive years. First at Cambridge University , then UCL . RESULT ! We are now very proud to call him Doctor Smedley, MA MBBS. Actually, just “Doc” to us.
Having Tom on board for the Transatlantic is a great comfort to crew and families alike. The race is 3000 + mile long . Some of it through ice cold seas and the inevitable storms at this time of year . Knowing the that Doc is there with his “black bag”, ( actually its red and a really comprehensive piece of kit) means that we can all rest assured that qualified medical help is there if an accident was to happen.
The celebrations started on the airplane and continued well into the night in Newport , R.I.
The next day it was very much Luke 4.23, “Physician heal thyself”. Alka Seltzer all round.
