Pre Race

With everything looking shipshape the crew decided that the best way to freak out the rest of the teams (some running around like madmen) was to take the day off.

Tony volunteered to act as tour guide so we set off in the team van for an Antiguan "magical mystery tour".

First stop Darkwood Beach, where the boys play a bit of Rugger-bee, rugby with a Frisbee.

We had no ball! Before a plunge in the sea. All of 22 degs C.

While we were flying the team colours on the beach Tony and Ned went off to the supermarket to stock up on Pringles. Seemly , it's  a tradition on Concise that the crew all get  together on deck each night at sunset when racing for a happy hour and a review of the race progress. It would  not be the same without Barbecue Pringles and warm Coca-Cola. We leave iced drinks for the wimps on the super yachts .And  sit down toilets too for that matter.

Then some real island colour. A stop of at the "Cane Bar".  No, not some sort of  S&M thing but this shack selling raw sugar cane, water nuts and Antiguan pineapples . All amazing!

Next stop Cecilia's for lunch. Cecelia is a former supermodel about 6 foot 2ins tall and the picture of her in the mens room wrapped in  black latex ,holding a hose pipe was a bit  unsettling before a long  offshore race with six blokes. Anyhow, the food was great even if the service put us a bit behind schedule.

While all of this was going on Tony was regaling us with stories of what it was like when he was first out here in the West Indies in the 1960s and 70s.That ,by the way ,makes him older than my Dad!    Everything, from how and why breadfruit trees got here, (Mutiny on the Bounty and all that stuff and to feed slaves) and how to avoid Dengue and other such perils.

We got back to the boat at 4pm so Brett could do his weather downloads and the other crews were still scurrying about. Finally , back to the apartment for a carb (pasta) dinner and talk , watches, positions etc . The nervous tension was palpable. Good though !
