It was never going to be easy! Racing just two handed against 22 other fully crewed Class 40 boats in the 2011 Fastnet Race is like sailing with your hands tied behind your back. Well eight hands actually, as the other boats in the division have six crew each. Anyhow, that’s what Team Concise decided to do to give Ned the best possible preparation for the “big one” . The Transat Jacques Vabre Race from France to Costa Rica this October.
It looked good on paper. The weather programmes all predicted a close reach to the Lizard. Just three tacks between the Solent and the Irish Sea. Some chance . Ned and his co pilot Jonny Malbon found the wind on the nose and had put in at least 12 tacks before they cleared the Solent. Exhausting just watching them from the chase boat. So Much for science!
